Referring Domains vs Backlinks: What’s the Difference? – Neil Patel

December 2, 2022 By Team Writer Leave a Comment

People often confuse backlinks with referring domains, but they aren’t the same. Backlinks (or inbound links) are hyperlinks between websites that site crawlers use to move around the internet. Internal links operate between pages on the same site. Backlinks operate at the page level, but referring domains operate at the website level. A referring domain is any external website that links to your site. Referring domains are what you want to increase. Adding more backlinks from the same sites don’t help much. Generally, backlinks from trusted sources can result in higher Google rankings. To obtain more backlinks, produce high-quality content and try guest posting and manual outreach (i.e., ask for them).

Key Takeaways:

  • Backlinks link pages to other pages, while referring domains refer to connections at the website level.
  • Getting a lot of links from the same website doesn’t help; you need to increase links to different referring domains.
  • To obtain more backlinks and referring domains, create quality content, guest post at other sites, and ask for backlinks.

“Referring domains and backlinks can be a complex topic, but understanding the difference between them can help you create smarter SEO strategies and improve your website’s presence on Google.”
